AdBlue In your Fuel

Throughout Lancashire we have noticed increasingly more cases of AdBlue contamination when a motorist has put AdBlue into their diesel tank. This is mostly as a result of drivers not being totally sure the way to use it (important: it is in fact not a fuel additive), and partly simply because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are generally right near to one another on the car.

Well, exactly what is the situation with having AdBlue in your diesel vehicle? Since AdBlue is mostly deionised water, it is almost the same as putting water in to your tank. Diesel and water don't mix in the least and trying to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. Additionally, the urea is very corrosive to the fuel system hoses and seals and is more prone to crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters.

If you find you put AdBlue into your fuel tank get it out asap. And certainly don't switch on the engine - not even to maneuver it to a parking area. If you have started the car you would almost certainly need to have the complete fuel system cleaned and fuel filters replaced.

Water contaminated fuel

Water contaminated fuel, regardless of whether it's petrol or diesel, is in many cases a significant issue to address in a vehicle - particularly in present-day common-rail engines. Putting water inside your fuel tank is going to contribute to idling problems, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if not dealt with effectively, potentially broken injectors. Having water in petrol is quicker to remove as compared to water in diesel - largely because diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we can deal with both cases very quickly.

Take note however that any time the vehicle has been started on the fuel contaminated with water it will most likely need a new fuel filter to be installed seeing as the old one is going to be thoroughly wet and useless.
